This is the most important dispute in Britain at the moment. Teaching assistants in Durham, faced with a 23% paycut from a Labour council, have organised themselves into an incredible rank and file movement that has forced their union, UNISON, to back strike action in scenes not witnessed in Durham since the miners strike. A victory by this mainly women workforce would strike a major blow against austerity, against the Labour councils who are implementing Tory policies, and send shockwaves through the trade union movement. Next strikes are on 23rd and 24th of November – you can donate to the strike fund at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/CountyDurhamTeachingAssistants – or better still, join them on the picket lines and give them a donation in person.
