Refuse workers in Glasgow City Council’s cleansing department vowed to fight on to get the terms and conditions they deserve at a strike rally in George Square, as their eight days of strike axtion came to an end.
The action has forced the council into agreeing a new pay grading system – but it won’t come into effect until April 2022, and there is still no movement on a pay rise, or in giving the £500 payment they’re owed as key workers during the pandemic.
They’ll now be balloting for strike action again, and installing an overtime ban. Glasgow City Council would do well to look at the gains being made in this sector across the country and give these workers what the deserve right now.
