Global Climate Jobs Conference 2023: Inspiring struggles from all over the world

Running time: 15 mins 20 secs

October 2023, Amsterdam: the campaign for global climate jobs receives a massive boost with a fantastic conference bringing together environmental, social and labour movements from across the world to plan the just transition we so desperately need to prevent runaway climate change.

We need to create around 200-250 million climate jobs – jobs that have a direct impact in cutting CO2 emissions – to avert disaster, and the discussions at the conference were brutally honest in acknowledging that we are not where we want to be. But the movements represented here were incredible, giving real hope that another world is possible.

This film gives you a taster of those movements, including the most advanced just transition process anywhere in the world, in Colombia; the huge movements building in South Africa; the Stop EACOP pipeline struggle in Tanzania; the huge mobilisations that spell the end government fossil fuel subsidies in the Netherlands; the astonishing gains for pubically owned renewable energy made by the electricians union in Mexico; the coordinated strikes by the climate justice movement and public transport workers in Germany; and the visionary GKN factory occupation in Italy attempting to enact a just transition under workers control.

The hope now is that this is the start of an active global network that can organise struggles beyond national limits. You can get involved by emailing globalclimatejobs@lists.riseup.net, and find out more at globalclimatejobs.org.
