The government is allowing modern slavery and trafficking to happen in UK farms and doing nothing about it – despite even the UN demanding action.
But now latin american fruitpickers are speaking up about their treatment, backed by the UVW union, the Landworkers’ Alliance and numerous other organisations.
At Haygrove farm in Herefordshire, young workers found the courage to walk out on a wildcat strike over intolerable conditions of bullying, exploitation, and additional charges that left with them with as little as £16 a week in wages – after being promised £500 a week for six months, a life-changing proposition for them.
Now they’re protesting in front of the Home Office for justice, stranded in a country with no money, where they don’t speak the language and are unable to work for anyone else.
The slavery scandal highlighted is shockingly endemic across a corrupt agricultural industry that rakes in eye-watering profits while criminally exploiting these workers. But the bravery they’re showing points the way to a different way of producing food that would benefit us all.

Pero ahora los recolectores de fruta de América Latina están denunciando el trato que reciben, respaldados por el sindicato UVW, la Landworkers’ Alliance y muchas otras organizaciones. El escándalo de la esclavitud que se ha puesto de relieve es sorprendentemente endémico en una industria agrícola corrupta que obtiene ganancias exorbitantes mientras explota criminalmente a estos trabajadores. Pero la valentía que están demostrando señala el camino hacia una forma diferente de producir alimentos que nos beneficiaría a todos.
