** LA DESCRIZIONE IN ITALIANO SEGUE QUELLA IN INGLESE **
Incredible scenes in Genova, Italy on October 30 as the city was shut down by a general strike called by the dockers over war, the cost of living and support for Palestine – as well as the serious issues faced by both workers and students.
An unprecedented 116 ports all over the world took simultaneous action, including, crucially, stopping the flow of arms to Israel for the day. Dockers in Genova were the first to take militant action of this kind in support of the Palestine people. It led to the first international dockers day of action last year with 25 ports taking part; and now this.
Out on the streets as well was an enormous bloc of high school and university students, who are now rising up over the same issues that have led to the mass youth mobilisations in France and so many other countries. And like in France, students are furious at a drive to imperialist war which is costing the Italian government 14 billion euros – taking money away from schools and universities in desperate need of repairs and resources, lowering salaries and making an already unbearably high cost of living even worse.
Even though the general strike wasn’t supported by the big unions, around two million walked out and attended demonstrations all over Italy, including demonstrations of 100,000 in both Milan and Turin. Now the big unions have called a general strike for November 20 over the cost of living – which happens to coincide with the international students’ day of action against war and rearmament.
For workers and students in countries who haven’t joined what is turning into a major uprising yet over problems we’re all facing – and yes, that means us in the UK in particular – that day would be a great time to start. The London demonstration will be at 1pm from Trafalgar Square on November 20; for more details of the strike, go to youthstrike.org.
