“DISSENT into Protest” is a superb exhibition on Palestine of work by Glasgow artist and activist, Euan Sutherland.
The exhibition consists of newly constructed miniature dioramas in two internconnected parts; one, the 19 flags for Palestine series, shows the many and varied protests over the genocide in Gaza, while the other, the Landscapes of Loss Black Box series, shows the reality of what has been happening in Gaza and Palestine for decades.
At a time when photographs and videos of the genocide have become so horrific that we are all finding them really difficult to look at and turning away, these incredible models are a way of drawing the viewer in, allowing them to think about what’s really going on in Gaza – and how they can get involved in doing something about it.
There is also an accompanying booklet with writings on Palestine from all over the world, which is also a fundraising vehicle – all monies raised through its sale will go to various Palestinian causes.
This video shows the exhibition in Glasgow, plus an earlier version in Edinburgh in conjunction with Network of Photographers for Palestine, an organisation that raises money for the people of Gaza by exhibiting work by Palestinian photographers.

The struggle for a free Palestine overlaps with so many other struggles, and maybe the best way to look at it can be summed up by one of the quotes in the booklet: “Keep struggling for Palestine, because the struggle for Palestine will secure your freedoms in your countries. And if you compromise with solidarity with Palestine, then you compromise your freedoms in your country.”
