Ridley Road Shopping Village in Hackney has been occupied to stop the evictions of 14 traders, all of Caribbean and African origin.
It is the latest attack on the market, which has existed since 1880 and is the beating, multicultural heart of Hackney.
The council – which is younger than the market – has allowed property developers to come in with plans to build luxury flats, and make profit out of an invaluable cultural institution; while continuing the racist profiling of the market and the police harassment of traders and shoppers that has gone on for years.
