Persons Unknown chose April 1 to shut down Tom Whites depot in Coventry yet again, the company scabbing on the Birmingham binworkers strike – set up by Coventry Labour councillors with millions of pounds of tax payers money, and costing tax payers millions more to scab on a workers who are trying to stop a pay cut of £8,000 a year by another Labour council.
This is more farcical than any April fools joke you could imagine, especially when settling the dispute would cost a fraction of what both councils have spent on trying to break it.
With more and more people joining in on direct action in support of the binworkers – who have themselves voted 100% yes to continuing on strike until at least September – this is a dispute that the councils can’t win. And could well prove to be their downfall in the council elections next month.
